E-way Bills Up in June after May’s Sharp Drop

E-way bill generation, a key metric measuring business activity, bounced back in June, indicating a strong recovery amid easing restriction and the second Covid-19 wave loosening its grip.

During June 1-20, 33.7 million e-way bills were generated,with a daily average of 1.68 million, higher than the daily average of 1.28 million in May, which led to a full month e-way bill generation of 39.9 million.

e-way bills are required for the transportation of goods of more than Rs.50,000 in value across the country.

The lowest number of e-way bills since June 2020 were generated in May, as states imposed tight restrictions to curb rising Covid cases.

June signals a change, with activity picking up. As per data accessed by ET, in the first 10 days of June, about 16 million e-way bills were generated, clocking Rs.5.24 lakh crore in value.

In the same period for May, only 12.2 million e-way bills were issued, valued at Rs. 4.29 lakh crore.
