FCRA License of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity Not Renewed

The FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) license of Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa wasn’t renewed as some adverse inputs were received against it, the Ministry of Home Affairs said on Monday. The MHA in a statement added that the Centre didn’t freeze bank accounts of the Kolkata-based organization, but the NGO itself had written to the State Bank of India asking it to freeze its accounts.

The clarification came after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee hit out at the Centre for ‘freezing’ all bank accounts of the organization.

“Shocked to hear that on Christmas, the Union Ministry FROZE ALL BANK ACCOUNTS of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity! 22,000 patients and employees have been left without food and medicines. While the law is paramount, humanitarian efforts must not be compromised,” she tweeted.

The MHA said that on December 21 it refused to renew the FCRA license after being made aware of adverse inputs. “In consideration of these inputs on record, the renewal application of Missionaries of Charity was not approved. The FCRA registration of Missionaries of Charity was valid up to December 31, 2021,” a statement from the ministry said, adding. “The MHA did not freeze any accounts of Missionaries of Charity. State Bank of India has informed that Missionaries of Charity itself sent a request to SBI to freeze its accounts.”

In a late evening statement, MoC’s Superior General Sister Prema said: “We would like to clarity that the FCRA registration of the Missionaries of Charity has been neither suspended nor cancelled. Further, there is no freeze ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs on any our bank accounts. We have been informed that FCRA renewed applications have not been approved.

Therefore, as a measure to ensure that there is no lapse, we have asked our centers not to operate any of the FC accounts until the matter is resolved.”

Vicar General, Archdiocese of Calcutta, Fr. Dominic Gomes, said: “In freezing the bank accounts of Missionaries of Charity Sisters and Brothers congregations, government agencies have given a cruel Christmas gift to the poorest of the poor. Besides over 22,000 direct dependents and beneficiaries at their centers across the country, MoC Sisters and Brothers reach out to uplift thousands and are often the only friends of the lepers and social outcasts no one will even venture near… We condemn the government action…”  S-ET
