Loans written off public sector banks came down significantly in FY 21 to Rs. 1.31 lakh crores as against Rs. 1.83 lakh crores in the previous fiscal, Rajya Sabha was informed Tuesday.

The quantum of loans waived was even higher in FY19 when Rs. 1.83 lakh crores were written off by public sector banks, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave this information in a written reply. Gross NPAs of public sector banks were over Rs. 6.16 lakh crores as of March 2021, if which over Rs. 1 lakh crores each were with Punjab National Bank and State Bank of India. The most waived-off loans belonged to SBI at Rs. 34,402 crores. S-ET
